DKW Jewelry & Decor Magazine
DKW is an 11” x 17” magazine cataloging my favorite jewelry and decor items that I have collected over the years. The images in this magazine are photos I took of still lifes set up around my room. With this magazine, I wanted to focus on unconventional, yet modern, typography and layout design. I experimented with the size and orientation of my type and wanted to maximize the white space in these spreads. I played with the overlap of solid and transparent rectangles as well as outlined rectangles with no fill. This magazine combines my love for decor, jewelry, and photography.

For this magazine, I wanted to use a color palette that I consider to be the “trademark” of my style: emerald green and gold. These colors can be found all throughout my life in my many “interest” areas: jewelry, decor, and design. Throughout the spreads, I included the colors at different transparencies to add depth and to help with the layering of shapes and lines.

I wanted this magazine to give off an expensive, “high-fashion,” editorial feel. I want it to act as a “coffee table book” that one places on their table for decoration. To match the editorial vibe of both the design of the magazine and the items in the photos themselves, I decided to use three serif fonts that have strong, distinct serifs: Big Caslon Medium, Didot, and Didot LT Pro. I drew reference from magazines like VOGUE and Architectural Digest when choosing these typefaces. Throughout the magazine I used multiple variations of these fonts, placing some in all caps, leaving some the way they are, and italicizing others.
